MILLS MUSIC MISSION

The Mills Music Mission is the ongoing official philanthropy of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.

Ossian Everett Mills, the “Father of Sinfonia,” devoted significant amounts of his time to uplifting the souls of the less fortunate with the beauty and power of music. On the late 1880’s, he and several others began visiting the residents of Boston hospitals on Easter and Christmas day to sing songs and bring flowers to the patients.

As the singers walked through the wards singing carols and hymns, each room was changed into a place of good cheer and happiness.

We continue this today by visiting local institutions to spread the uplifting message that Ossian Mills started so many years ago.
AMERICAN MUSIC RECITAL

Each spring semester, the Mu Xi Chapter and Faculty Sinfonians present a recital showcasing music created within our own great country. We conclude the recital with a mass performance of several of our traditional fraternity songs.
STEP SING

Each semester, the brothers and Faculty Sinfonians get together on the steps of the music building lobby to spread cheer through fellowship and music. It is at this time that the probationary class of that semester get to first perform with the fraternity.
GAME DAY LETTERS

At every home football game, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia traditionally dons our letter shirts, places our field letters next to the Marching Band and sits with them while cheering on the Lumberjacks.

The current set of field letters were donated by Mark Powell, father of Brother Colin Powell (Spring ‘06).

LOYALTY TO THE ALMA MATER.

The Mu Xi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia does its part to help out the school of music whenever possible.  We save the school hundreds of dollars each year by moving pianos for various occasions and ushering at the University Series concerts.
